Most commercial radio stations exist because they can sell advertising. The editorial, the music, the presenters — all of it is infrastructure for delivering audiences to advertisers who pay for that access. Understanding how radio advertising works explains why stations are programmed the way they are, why certain formats attract higher rates, and what the relationship is between listener behaviour and commercial revenue.
How radio advertising is priced
Radio advertising is sold primarily on reach and frequency. Reach is the number of different individuals who hear an ad in a given period. Frequency is how many times each person hears it. The standard unit is cost per thousand listeners (CPT or CPM). A breakfast show on a major station — reaching a large audience concentrated in a short window — commands the highest CPT. Drive time (morning and afternoon commutes) is typically the most commercially valuable daypart, reflecting the large captive in-car audience.
Spot advertising and sponsorship
The most common format is the spot — a 30-second recorded advertisement placed in the commercial break between programme segments. Sponsorship packages sell the association between an advertiser’s brand and a specific programme (“the weather forecast, brought to you by…”). Promotional competitions, where listeners are invited to call in to win prizes often supplied by a sponsor, combine advertising with audience engagement. Presenter reads — where the host delivers an ad in their own voice — blur the line between editorial and advertising and are regulated differently in each country.
The digital measurement advantage
Traditional radio advertising could only measure audience size, not whether anyone actually responded to an ad. Digital radio and streaming audio allow response tracking — how many people heard an ad, whether they searched for the brand, whether they visited a website — creating measurable ROI that brings radio advertising closer to the accountability standards of digital display. This data capability has helped radio hold its advertising market share as digital media has taken spend from print and television.
